This course is designed for any student who values developing and maintaining their health and wellbeing. The learning and practical activities in this course will set students up for leaving Epsom Girls as a well rounded person, with life skills, knowledge and good habits to set them up for success beyond school life. Being physically active during the school day has proven benefits that will support student's academic achievement, cognition, engagement, attendance and mental health.
The units of work students will take part in are:
Body in Motion - In this unit of work, students will take part in practical activities based around a movement context ( eg badminton, basketball etc ) and reflect on how these influence their wellbeing, using a recognised model of wellbeing such as Te Whare Tapa Wha, Fonofale, Te Wheke etc. Students will sit a 5 credit written external assessment for this unit of work.
Active and Awesome - Students will have the opportunity to take part in a variety of physical activities.They will further develop skills and knowledge and understanding of strategies and rules for various physical activities including games, dance, aquatics and fitness. Through physical activity students will develop fitness, interpersonal skills and collaboration with others.
Smart Choices, Strong Bodies - The learning in this unit of work will focus on good nutrition for teenagers. Students will learn nutritional knowledge that they can apply to their everyday life. The project for this unit will focus on sports nutrition, where students will research and develop and 'on the go' breakfast, that is practical and useful to fuel students after early morning sports practices.
Feeling Good - This unit focuses exploring mental health, including talking about and understanding the events and stressors that can impact on how young people feel. Students will work on a group project based around relaxation strategies that young people could use to help maintain good mental health.
Myself and Others - This learning focuses on navigating relationships. Learning will focus around aspects of healthy and unhealthy relationships, including skills to navigate these. The learning will also build on the student's prior knowledge around contraception.
Keeping Myself Safe - Students will develop their knowledge on drugs and alcohol. This will include health effects of drug use, laws around drugs and strategies to stay safe in drug and alcohol situations. Students will develop critical thinking and decision making skills to maintain their values around drugs and alcohol, as well as stay safe.
My Journey: Subjects, Skills and Success - The career pathway learning in this unit will see students explore how their personality might suit particular career pathways. Students will take part in their own career research, where they match their subject interests with their passions, to explore possible career pathways. This learning is crucial for subject planning beyond year 11. Students will learn how to write a CV, to set them up for possible part time employment in their future.
