Music Lessons


We offer music lessons during the school day. Students are taught by experienced musicians in a wide range of instruments. The tutors for our music lessons are:

Now is the time of year to either return your instrument to the Music Department, or indicate that you will be taking it home over the Summer to practice on. Let us know on the Google Form below which one you will be doing:

PLEASE NOTE THAT EVERY STUDENT WHO WISHES TO TAKE MUSIC LESSONS NEXT YEAR MUST COMPLETE THIS FORM, REGARDLESS IF YOU HAVE BEEN TAKING LESSONS IN 2024.

MUSIC GROUPS: INFO AND SIGNUP FORMS


-BANDS-


The EGGS Bands are our ensembles for woodwind, brass and percussion players. They play a wide variety of music, from Classical to Jazz, and many other genres in-between. They practice and perform regularly throughout the year, and work towards events such as the KBB Music Festival in August, alongside the Epsom Orchestras. All students at EGGS who play an instrument are encouraged to join one of these groups.

Concert Band performs a wide variety of music in many styles, from classical to arrangements of popular music, and everything in between. They perform not only at KBB, but at many other school events.

Jazz Combos

The Epsom Combos revolve around Jazz repertoire, and its members are specially chosen from the Concert Band. They enjoy learning about special musical skills like improvisation, which feature regularly in their music.

Flute Choir

The Flute Choir is a group specifically for flautists at EGGS, performing repertoire written especially for flutes in multiple parts. 


-CHOIRS-


The EGGS Choirs are our vocal music groups, open to all students interested in learning about singing. They sing music from many genres, and play an important role in leading school singing. They practice and perform regularly throughout the year, and work towards events such as The Big Sing Choral Festival in June, as well as joint concerts with choirs from other schools. Whether you are interested in singing pop music or jazz, musicals, or classical music, the Epsom Choirs are a great place to enjoy singing together.

Leogato is our all-comers massed choir. It is open to any student at EGGS who wants to join. This choirs name comes from a combination of the words leo, referring to the lion in the school's emblem, and legato, an Italian word meaning "smooth and connected"

This is our auditioned Junior Choir. All year 9 and 10 students are welcome to audition for a place in the group. This choir's name comes from an Italian word meaning "flourishing"

Luminoso Senior Choir

This is our auditioned Senior Choir. All year 11 to 13 students are welcome to audition for a place in the group.  This choir's name comes from an Italian word meaning "shining brightly"

Paradisum

Paradisum is the  premiere auditioned choir at EGGS, and strives to perform at the highest standard of choral singing. This choir's name comes from the grassy area between the Hall and the fields, Paradise


-ORCHESTRAS-


The EGGS Orchestras are our classical instrumental music groups, open to all students who play an orchestral instrument.  They are regularly performing at events within and outside of the school, and make appearances at the KBB Music Festival, alongside Epsom Bands. They perform music from around the world, include plenty of music from Aotearoa, and have been recognised for high quality performances on such music. All instrumentalists are encouraged to join one of these groups.

This group was formed to give an opportunity for ensemble playing to less experienced string instrument players. This group is not auditioned, and any student who plays the violin, viola or cello is encouraged to join this group, no matter how much (or little) experience they have.

Epsom Chamber Orchestra

Epsom Chamber Orchestra is an auditioned ensemble, also made up of string players.  They perform a great variety of music from the classical music canon, and focus on refined and historically-informed performance to a high standard.

Epsom Symphonia

Eosom Symphonia is our other auditioned orchestra, including players from all of the orchestral sections.  They perform music of many different genres, and have seen much success at endeavours outside of school,  such as at the KBB Music Festival, and performances on the world stage.

Epsom Chamber Music Groups

EGGS has a proud tradition of chamber music, with many students participating in the NZCT Chamber Music contest in June. Instrumentalists and classical singers are encouraged to participate. There are no auditions, but experience at a Grade 5 level would be greatly beneficial.


-CONTEMPORARY MUSIC-


Epsom Contemporary Music gives students the opportunity to form their own bands. These bands are encouraged to enter Smokefree RockQuest. Epsom Contemporary Music also gives students the opportunity to write and record original songs to enter in the Play It Strange competition, for the chance to have their song professionally recorded. There are no auditions, but prior experience playing an instrument or singing is beneficial for your experience.
